When the U.S. federal government helps other nations address their HIV/AIDS epidemics, we ask those governments to develop a national AIDS strategy that provides a roadmap for effective delivery of services and steadily improved results. Surprisingly, the U.S. has never developed a comprehensive strategy of its own in the 26 years of the AIDS crisis.
Today, M+R is working with the Gay Men’s Health Crisis to change that!
Since 2006, M+R has helped GMHC secure nearly $3 million in federal funding to expand its mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment programs for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. We've also organized congressional briefings and multiple Lobby Days for GMHC. In 2007, for example, we designed and directed GMHC’s federal Lobby Day, which began with a morning congressional briefing attended by over 100 stakeholders, including representatives from congressional offices, government agencies and health advocates. A bus of 75 HIV/AIDS advocates from New York City then spent the rest of the day lobbying targeted congressional offices.
