Manage Growth and Sustainability in a Dynamic Consulting Firm

M+R Strategic Services is a campaign firm that provides an array of services, including campaign planning and management, media relations, online advocacy/online fundraising, field organizing, lobbying, and strategic assessments for nonprofit organizations and foundations. In 2008, M+R served 145 individual clients, including local, national and international organizations, most of which were nonprofits. M+R has an appetite to increase its work with professional and trade associations, labor unions and for-profit corporations. The firm has averaged 15% growth in revenue in each of the past three years.

Overview

M+R seeks a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to manage the operations of the firm. The COO will be in regular contact with members of the executive team and leaders of practice divisions and regional offices; oversee administrative activity; and work to improve productivity, quality of services and profitability.   

Job Responsibilities

The COO will focus mainly internally to develop and implement strategies and programs to ensure that M+R’s operations are as economic, efficient and effective as possible. The COO will play a key role in the overall leadership and management of the organization, including:

Overseeing and Managing Operations

  • Participate with other senior managers in setting the direction and goals for the firm.
  • Take primary responsibility for activities that impact firm operations, particularly those relating to profit and loss.
  • Assist senior managers and the marketing division in setting client fees and consulting arrangements.
  • Review/approve vendor and client contracts.
  • Oversee client review programs.
  • Ensure that operating procedures are understood and practiced throughout the firm.
  • Manage human resources, information technology and liaison with outside counsel.

Ensure Efficient Staffing

  • Supervise human resource activities, including the recruitment, hiring and orientation of new employees. Conduct confidential exit interviews with departing employees.
  • Oversee the implementation of human resources policies, including bonus programs.
  • Develop and oversee staff review and training programs.

Oversee Facilities Management

  • Oversee all offices including expansion and subleasing.
  • Negotiate terms and procedures affecting tenants subletting space from M+R.
  • Oversee the firm-wide IT program, including equipment leasing and purchase agreements.

Qualifications

M+R is seeking a team player who is also able to play a lead management role and enjoys the uncertainties inherent in managing operations in a fast-paced, growing, entrepreneurial organization where roles and responsibilities are evolving and changing frequently. The person needs to be comfortable multi-tasking competing priorities and working under tight deadlines.  The job requires flexibility, self-confidence, sound judgment, and good people skills, including the ability to provide advice and counsel to staff.

The successful applicant must have the ability to work at all levels of the organization, from relating to and supporting the entry-level staff to providing honest and clear assessments to executive management to troubleshooting issues that may arise with vendors or clients. The COO must be able to work symbiotically and collaboratively with the leadership team and maintain open channels of communications with division and regional office staff. The COO must possess the skills to reach across multiple divisions and departments with an understanding of business management processes and an appreciation of campaign tactics. Ideally, the successful applicant would have experience working in a consulting environment and understand how to meet client-imposed deadlines and manage deliverables in a competitive and changing market environment. Finally, the COO must command respect and demonstrate involved leadership within the organization as well as with clients.

Graphic Designer

M+R Strategic Services is looking for a graphic designer to design fresh and creative graphics to complement our cutting-edge online campaigns for some of the best progressive nonprofits out there. 

Spend your days working with organizations that make a difference – help end breast cancer, protect a woman's right to choose, save endangered wildlife, end the genocide in Darfur, fight global poverty and hunger, and more. 

Job Responsibilities

The graphic designer will work with a team of online advocacy, fundraising and marketing professionals as well as nonprofit clients and technology vendors. Primary design responsibilities include concepting and creating graphics for use in our clients' online fundraising, advocacy and marketing campaigns. Tasks may include designing email and website wrappers, website looks, banner advertisements, custom layouts and graphics for MySpace pages and Facebook applications, social networking badges and icons, etc. Designer may also be called on to create print graphics, such as flyers or postcards.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a degree in graphic design or a related field with at least two years of work experience. They should possess excellent design skills for the web. Knowledge of Flash is preferred, but not required.

Successful applicants will be creative, skilled at turning a written or verbal concept into a compelling visual, detail -oriented, communicate effectively, work well collaboratively, and have experience managing multiple projects at once. Familiarity with the online campaigning field or past experience with nonprofits is a plus.

Online Writer

The eCampaigns division of M+R Strategic Services seeks an experienced, creative, and concise writer to produce compelling and effective email and web copy. We work with a range of progressive not-for-profits – like the Human Rights Campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice America, The Wilderness Society, Habitat for Humanity, Oxfam America, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure – on their online advocacy, fundraising and recruitment campaigns.

We’re looking for someone who can write an email that is so compelling and so well-structured that it will make its readers bust out their credit cards then and there or run to the phone to call a decision-maker. If you can figure out a way to connect a famine in east Africa to the life of an upper middle class American reader in just one short sentence or turn “Ask your Representative to vote in support of H.B. 1726” into something compelling, this may be the job for you!

We need a writer who can turn things around fairly quickly and who will not be intimidated by writing on a range of issues in a variety of styles or have trouble juggling multiple assignments. Candidates should possess a superior knowledge of grammar, as well as strong copyediting and proofreading skills.

Three years' experience writing copy for advertising and marketing campaigns, online fundraising or advocacy, direct mail, speeches, or persuasion mail is required.

Online Campaigns Associate

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in a Client Team to create and implement effective Internet campaigns for progressive non-profit clients;
  • Manage technology needed to set up and manage online communications;
  • Manage online and traditional media communications campaigns;

  • Run queries and create monthly client reports to track email messaging, advocacy campaigns, membership recruitment, and return on investment;
  • Manipulate and manage data and help draft memos on campaign results;

Additional Qualifications

Proposal Writer

M+R is looking for a full-time writer to join our team in Washington, D.C.  The job requires someone who is energetic, independent and professional.  The ideal person for this position will be comfortable juggling multiple writing and editing projects against tight deadlines with minimal oversight. 

What will you do every day at M+R?  You’ll help our campaign teams craft compelling proposals to nonprofits like Oxfam America, Habitat for Humanity, American Rights at Work, Easter Seals, and many others.  M+R works with groups like these every day to help them engage their supporters, raise money and awareness, earn headlines, and change public policy.  Proposal writing is a critical part of that work – it’s often the first impression nonprofits get of M+R, so concise, high quality and persuasive copy is a must!  As a Proposal Writer, you’ll work with M+R staff around the country to help develop creative ideas for potential new clients.  You’ll be expected to contribute to the creative process that goes into every proposal we write.

Daily responsibilities include:

• Tracking prospects across the firm each week;
• Organizing and participating in brainstorming sessions for new campaigns;
• Fielding pre-pitch calls with potential clients, taking detailed notes about an organization’s needs and expected deliverables;
• Coordinating with M+R staff to write proposals, developing new content as needed based on conversations with M+R staff and prospective clients, often under tight timelines;
• Managing the RFP response process when applicable;
• Researching, writing and editing, including editing client reports as needed;
• Developing Power Point presentations for pitch meetings and leading pitch rehearsals;
• Coordinating with graphic designers if/when necessary on proposal layout, campaign concepts, Power Points, etc;
• Jumping in to provide back-up on client work as needed; and
• Contributing to marketing, including writing and editing content for the M+R website, e-Newsletter and marketing materials as needed.

Job Requirements

• 2-3 years experience writing and editing; multiple formats preferred (online, grants, marketing copy, journalism, etc).
• Demonstrated interest in nonprofit advocacy.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects against tight deadlines.
• Organized and detail oriented.
• Sense of humor and good people skills, works well with others! 
• Patient – you’ll be the person who needs to keep the process moving in a busy work environment.
• Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Power Point).
• Graphic design experience not necessary but a plus; be sure to mention if you’ve had experience working with designers/layout.
