Senior Strategist for Communications, Campaigns Division

M+R Strategic Services, a public affairs firm specializing in nonprofit clients, seeks a Senior Strategist for Communications to join our Campaigns Division in our Washington, DC, office. At M+R, we’re dedicated to working with nonprofits whose concerns place them on the side of the broad public interest. We specialize in working with organizations focused on human rights, public health, international relief, the environment and consumer advocacy issues. Every day, we recruit supporters, raise money, generate media attention and run sophisticated integrated advocacy campaigns for groups working on the most important issues of the day.

Position Summary
M+R is looking for an energetic, ambitious and seasoned communications professional to join our team. The Senior Strategist will be an integral part of the Campaigns Division supporting senior staff in a variety of responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage clients. Work with clients to develop, integrate and implement their public relations campaigns.
  • Conduct client relations. Provide excellent service acumen.
  • Provide strategic input. Work with account teams and clients to execute public relations campaigns on behalf of our clients.
  • Build and maintain relationships. Create and maintain strong relationships with media outlets and campaign allies to coordinate and disseminate information.
  • Work closely with campaigns team. Work with team members at all levels and mentor junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Four to six years of experience, including time spent in a public relations firm.
  • Proven media relations aptitude—including feature stories, expert positioning and op-eds— with both national and high-level media.
  • Account and team management coupled with excellent client relations.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Political, public policy or nonprofit experience also desirable.
  • Campaign experience a plus.

Vice President of Communications, Campaigns Division

Position Summary
The Vice President of Communications is responsible for developing and overseeing public relations programs and campaigns and serves as an integral part of the communications team leadership in the Campaigns Division. You’ll work on some of the most important issues of the day, with leading nonprofit organizations such as American Lung Association, Transportation for America, American Jewish World Service, The MacArthur Foundation, 350.org, and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop strategic communication plans. Work with clients to develop, integrate and implement their public relations campaigns.
  • Oversee public relations programs. Manage staff and clients to execute public relations campaigns on behalf of our clients, including effectively managing budgets for each campaign.
  • Work closely with communications team. Manages team members and provides strategic guidance to the entire team.
  • New client acquisition. Contribute to firm marketing and business development, including identifying and securing new clients.
  • Build and maintain relationships. Create and maintain strong relationships with media outlets and campaign allies to coordinate and disseminate information.

Qualifications

  • Ideal candidate will have at least 8 to 10 years experience, including working for a public relations firm, political strategies and policy development.
  • Demonstrated client relations skills, including managing multiple clients, working successfully with clients through challenging or complex situations, overcoming obstacles, and positioning oneself as a trusted advisor with clients.
  • Established business development background, including experience generating leads, writing or overseeing proposal development and securing new client opportunities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, staff and scheduled deadlines.
  • Proven experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Tested ability to craft effective media relations and communications strategies, within a public relations or campaign setting, and provide senior counsel and management to clients.
  • Strong supervisory skills, including at least four to five years of experience managing staff at different levels.
  • Political, public policy or nonprofit experience also desirable.
  • Messaging and branding experience a major plus.
  • Leadership experience with integrated campaigns also a plus.

Campaigns Intern

M+R Strategic Services is a public affairs firm specializing in strategic communications and media relations, government affairs and campaign design, and online advocacy and fundraising. For two decades, we have planned, developed and executed winning strategies for many of the country’s most effective nonprofits, foundations and other mission-focused organizations.

M+R’s Campaign’s team, which includes a mix of PR pros, campaign veterans, experienced grassroots strategists and non-profit insiders, works to advance their clients’ issues and further their causes through strategic communications and grassroots mobilization. Our communications professionals on the team have substantial insight into the policy and politics approach to strategic communications and media relations, which is embedded in a comprehensive public relations and advocacy philosophy. They know how to put the best story forward in order to earn media coverage, shape public dialogue, engage new supporters, and create lasting change. Additionally, M+R’s grassroots strategists help clients advance their issues and further their causes through dynamic on-the-ground mobilization campaigns by using the most effective tools available to ensure that messages from the field reach their intended targets.

We are seeking a strong, hard-working and motivated candidate to join our team as a Full Time Campaigns Intern, which will consist of both communications and organizing duties.

Intern responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Assist with writing, proofreading, copying, and distributing press materials (press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, follow-up letters, etc.)
  • Research various media outlets for story angles and placement ideas
  • Build and maintain media lists for various client projects
  • Assist with the development of new business presentations
  • Compile and record clips of client’s media coverage
  • Provide support to integrated issue campaigns, as well as assist with online and offline grassroots and grasstops campaigns
  • Assist with overarching field and political strategies at the federal and state levels
  • Assist client teams with various day to day account operation
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Recent college graduate, or less than a year of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in Lexis-Nexis, THOMAS, Factiva, and other online searchable databases
  • Experience with media contact databases, such as Cision, and organizing tools, like Salsa
  • Fluency in basic aspects of policy and understanding of the legislative process
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills
  • Previous internship experience preferred

Online Associate

M+R Strategic Services is looking our next Associate to join one of the best firms in the business to work on cutting-edge online advocacy and fundraising campaigns. You’ll be helping progressive, public-interest nonprofits like the Human Rights Campaign, League of Conservation Voters, American Cancer Society, and Red Cross recruit online activists, influence public policy, raise money online, and deepen relationships with their supporters.

This is a job where you’ll get incredible training at a speedy clip. You’ll need one to three years of relevant work experience and be looking to learn online advocacy and fundraising from the ground up.

The Job:

  • Work in a team to create and implement effective digital campaigns for clients;
  • Manage eCRM technology such as Salsa and Convio to set up and blast email communications;
  • Help draft action alerts, fundraising appeals, social media copy, and other creative materials;
  • Run queries and create client reports to track email messaging, advocacy campaigns, membership recruitment, and return on investment;
  • Execute testing strategies, such as A/B testing, to optimize campaigns;
  • Pull and analyze data and help draft memos on campaign results;
  • Manage paid online advertising and other email list growth initiatives;
  • Help to devise social media, mobile or other web development strategies that integrate with email campaigns;
  • Project management: Keep task lists, meetings agendas, and communications calendars across your clients;
  • Wrangle teammates at all levels to keep your teams running smoothly.
