The Keep Antibiotics Working Coalition is dedicated to ending the inappropriate use of antibiotics in food animals. For more than 5 years, M+R has helped KAW promote its issues and build grassroots support in target states by mobilizing supporters to write editorials, op-eds and letters to the editor, stage and attend media events, and hold news conferences, yielding hundreds of print, online, television, and radio stories, editorials, and op-eds in outlets such as CNN Headline News, NPR, Time Magazine, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.
As a result of M+R’s work, KAW has been able to:
Persuade nearly 400 organizations to endorse legislation to phase out the use of medically important antibiotics as feed additives;
- Influence major restaurant chains (including McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Domino’s, Hardee’s, Wendy’s, Popeye’s, Subway, and Bon Appétit) to publicly agree to stop purchasing chicken treated with antibiotics;
- Prompt six of the top 20 poultry producers to stop administering Cipro-like antibiotics to chicken; and
- Most recently, expose the link between MRSA (the latest ‘superbug’) and pig farming, and derail the proposed use of a controversial drug in cattle.
