Komen Community Challenge

In 2006, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® asked M+R to conduct a groundbreaking assessment of breast cancer policy in U.S. communities with high breast cancer mortality rates.  When the findings showed that low-income and minority women were disproportionately impacted by a lack of access to quality breast cancer care and information, M+R then helped Komen take action by planning the Komen Community Challenge, a 25-city tour to “close the gap” in access to breast cancer care!

At the kick-off Challenge in April 2007, nearly 150 Komen supporters from 34 states met with Congress, and hundreds of breast cancer survivors rallied at Capitol Hill.  M+R then helped Komen take its special brand of pink ribbon activism nationwide, reaching tens of thousands of people at town hall meetings, round-tables, baseball games, lobby days, and more.

With M+R’s help, the Komen Community Challenge:

  • Led to millions of new dollars allocated through state budgets to increase access to early detection for underinsured and uninsured women;
  • Recruited thousands of new Komen activists who registered with a high rate of engagement; and
  • Earned significant local media coverage in every town and city the tour visited, engaging grasstops and community stakeholders on the issue and energizing Komen supporters to take action to end breast cancer forever!
