M+R has been working with the Onondaga Indian Nation since 2005 to prepare for and publicize a historic land rights lawsuit against New York State for fraudulent acquisition of its tribal land. M+R has helped the Onondaga Indian Nation emphasize its environmental stewardship, eschew casinos and pledge not to evict individual property owners. Through meetings with local elected officials and the editorial boards, M+R has helped publicize the issues behind the lawsuit, including the Honeywell Corporation’s devastation of Onondaga Lake, which sits within the disputed land and is seen as the center of the Onondaga Indian Nation’s cultural heritage.
With M+R’s help, the Onondaga Indian Nation has received positive coverage from The New York Times, the Syracuse Post-Standard, the Associated Press, and every major news outlet within the Nation’s historic territory. While the dispute continues, the campaign has helped Onondaga Indian Nation earn public respect and a laudable reputation for land stewardship.
