Increased attacks on the environment and subversion of the laws meant to protect our natural resources led Public Interest Projects (PIP) to hire M+R’s Seattle team to run six House environmental education campaigns in five states. M+R’s task was to
improve the environmental voting records of swing members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
We spent several months narrowing down the list of targets to six House members, interviewing stakeholders, researching and identifying targets, creating bios and background documents, and developing strategies to pressure these representatives to improve their environmental votes. Our organizers then took the lead on each targeted House member, hiring staff, building local coalitions and pressuring their targets through a variety of tactics, including paid ads, blog posts, and penetrating these representatives’ inner circles. By the end of the campaign, we had improved the LCV (League of Conservation Voters) score and general attitude of the six key House members toward environmental policy.
